As playing numbers continued to decline in the mid 1990s, the game of rugby all but died in Malawi. Its existence was limited to the occasional social match.
In recent years, the game has seen a mini revival but not in any formal or structured way. Social matches have become more frequent and interest in the game is generally increasing thanks to a small nucleus of individuals combined with the efforts of teachers and students at St. Andrews International High School.
Although the social side of the game can and will continue, the future of the game in Malawi depends on the participation of local Malawians. With very few adult Malawians possessing any knowledge of rugby, the development will have to come from schools and youths. The signs in this area are currently very promising with 5 local schools already participating in coaching and playing in Luchenza, 30 kilometers from Blantyre. The RFUM is currently building on this base, the aim being to grow and develop the game in Malawi.
