Who are we?
- The Shine Centre’s success in improving literacy levels is recognised and endorsed by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), allowing us to operate during school hours. We are in partnership with nine schools in the Western Cape, each with a stable infrastructure accommodating a fully operational Shine Centre. Our Literacy Hour programme is aligned to the National Curriculum and is integrated into the schools’ morning timetable. We assess the reading and literacy levels of all Grade One, Two and Three children in these nine schools. Children needing additional support are paired with a trained volunteer and work through a structured programme twice a week for two years (or less if they progress at a faster pace). Ongoing individual assessments are scheduled at certain intervals throughout the year to monitor progress. We support educators with training, books and literacy resources and facilitate the set up of class book clubs.
